UNALIGNED

hadesWhat the Hades is going on?

Zee wants Bo to think they’re on the same side and that they share a common goal – to stop Hades from escaping the underworld and ending life on Earth as we know it.

I have my doubts.

Zee doesn’t seem trustworthy. I have trouble believing that someone who wants to be aligned with Bo in stopping the Big Bad Dad would also be responsible for killing a lot of people indiscriminately as she works to establish herself in a new world. It’s like this broken calculator that I have – it doesn’t add up.

Zee and Heratio have also kept Iris tied up in her bedroom with some industrial-strength restraints. While Iris does seem to harbor a destructive power within herself – the Nix, a power born of chaos which confers upon Iris the Midas touch of death – it was put into…

Well, look who it is.  Torri Higginson was on set today, kicking ass – as do most of the women on this show – as Commander Delaney Truffault.  A quick visit from the former Toronto resident – but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing her again in the not too distant future.

Two units filming today.  While main unit was in the mess and infirmary shooting the argument, the confrontation, the fall, and that weird kid moment – second unit was shooting at the airlock (for the unwelcome welcome), in the corridor (Zoie Palmer, as the Android, delivers one of stunt coordinator/2nd unit director John Stead’s favorite lines of the episode) and some of the quarters…

Guess who’s room we shot in today?

If the Season 2 finale of Mistresses — which ended with Alyssa Milano’s Savi about to bust her ex-husband and her younger sister mid-makeout — had you anxiously covering your eyes, you may want to maintain that position when the delectable sudser returns to ABC this summer.

The Mind Reels

If you’ve missed the US broadcasts, starting this evening in the Great White North on local CHCH channels, from co-creators Kevin Abrams and Adam Moore, is this western series that follows the cases of the legendary Pinkertons, the original detective agency.

Leading the charge is the always delightful Martha MacIsaac as Kate Warne, a smart, capable young woman, and perhaps the first female private investigator of her time, and consequently having to do things better, and smarter than her male counterparts; in this case the father-son combination of Alan (Angus Macfadyen) and William Pinkerton (Jacob Blair).

In the premiere, the group is thrown together, to try to stop a series of train robberies, which actually has a more sinister agenda; it seems ex-Confederate soldiers are behind the incidents, and are concocting a plan that may endanger the newly stabilized country.

The show, at least in its premiere, is a fun, banter-filled, disguise-wearing, six-shooter-wielding romp suitable for the…

Director Paolo Barzman humoring me. Director Paolo Barzman humoring me.

I spent much of the weekend going over the two week’s worth of dailies we’ve amassed to date.  For those not in the know, “dailies” refers to the collected footage from the previous day’s shoot.  It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the available material – especially when it comes time to do your edit. If something isn’t working for you, it’s a simple matter of requesting that brilliant alternate take or delivery that didn’t make the director’s cut.  What’s leftover finds its way into those outtakes, blooper reels, and deleted footage extras the fans love so much while so much more is lost to time.  Somewhere, in the crawlspace of my Vancouver home sit two boxes of videocassettes containing dailies from Stargate SG-1 seasons 4 through 7.  Highlights include unaired scenes, serpent guards stumbling about in unwieldy oversized helmets, and Michael Shanks (Daniel…

#LostGirl: Season 05, Episode 08, End of Faes

If my last few reviews have sounded like I’m suggesting a bunch of theories and am wholly unsure what’s going to stick; well, yeah. Especially since the end of Season 3, there’s no true predicting where the show could be going, because it could be anywhere. Commenting on one episode’s symbolism and metaphors and what characters have actually done is one thing, but trying to figure out where the sum of the parts is going – especially when sometimes it takes a season and a half to explain something like that glowing handprint, and even then it feels as if they weren’t quite positive where it was going when it was introduced – well, it’s a bit of a fool’s errand. With that said, I’m going a little different direction with this, the last review before the break.

January 25, 2015: Somewhere between druidic and herbaceous!

“I really like Joe,”said our Assistant Production Manager Robbie David.  “He’s always so positive.”

“Positive?”asked my writer partner, Paul, instantly dubious.  Having known me for well over twenty-five years, he’d be the first to tell you that “positive” would probably be well down on the list of adjectives used to paint a picture of yours truly (falling somewhere between “druidic” and “herbaceous”).   “Joe?”

“Yeah,”said Robbie.  “I saw him on his way in.  He was talking about how great it was that he had the opportunity to see different parts of Ontario like Hamilton and Kitchener.”

A full three seconds of silence and then, Paul: “Robbie, he was being sarcastic.”

“He was?”

Yes, apparently, that happens a lot – people taking my sarcasm for genuine sincerity.  So, to be clear: I DON’T think a rogue equipment manager is to blame for ensuring quarterback Tom Brady had some nice grippably deflated…

Why, I wondered, is there blood on the floor?  And then: Why is there blood on the blanket?  And: Why is there blood on the dog bed?  Upon closer scrutiny, I had my answer.  Jelly had, somehow, snagged her dewclaw and torn it badly.  She seemed oblivious, more focused on the water bowl than her mangled paw, apparently not bothered by the ugly wound.  I, on the other hand, instantly felt dizzy on her behalf.

After checking with about a half dozen vets in the area, I settled on the one who could see us soonest – at 9:30 a.m., which would give me an hour before I had to leave for Kitchener and our final location day for the episodes #101/#102 of Dark Matter (a little scifi t.v. show I may have mentioned here on occasion).

We arrive for 9:20 a.m. in the hopes that…

Joseph Mallozzi's Weblog

An early blog entry today as I’m in Waterloo for a day of fun out of the sun.  Plenty of fireworks in store for us tonight as we shoot our explosive finish, so I’ve got my earplugs at the ready.

I suppose it’s only fitting then that I make today’s instalment a Dark Matter Girls with Guns pictorial!

Hey, we're shooting the Saga movie! Starring our Kelly Diamond as Alana! Hey, we’re shooting the Saga movie! Starring our Kelly Diamond as Alana!

Caitlin and Natalie = Charlie's Angels III! Caitlin is unnervingly cool.  Natalie has equally unnerving crazy eyes.

I'd actually watch this buddy cop movie. I’d actually watch this buddy cop movie.
